Laden artic nearly goes for a swim - East Tilbury

Post by MGC » Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:55 pm

This incident took place on narrow lanes in east tilbury today. The roads lead from the docks to several large companies , one being a metal recycling yard. It’s probably ideal for it’s purpose being near the docks/ Thames / motorways and also away from residential areas.

The only drawback seems to be the extra burden the transport companies have whilst accessing them. Fairly constant streams of laden hgvs having to pass each other with little room to spare. (Some of the images show other artics carefully inching their way through).

That was the cause of this problem. Whilst having to get well over to the near side when passing the oncoming vehicle, the driver felt the trailer drop off the edge of the road and it immediately sunk up to its axles. It was leaning badly and had lifted the osr of the tractor unit off the ground. It appears that it was only the depth of the soft earth to the lower side of the trailer that prevented it overturning. It was fully laden at 44t and has a high centre of gravity.

The rotator was set up to create a lift to the lower side, whilst providing a diagonal pull to the rear corner of the body. Wheel slings were used on the upper side and it was rigged to provide a lift when required. It took a little while to set up but the actual recovery went well, allowing the artic to continue its journey and discharge the load.
