Laden artic overturns under A26 bridge

Post by MGC » Fri Feb 19, 2021 5:35 pm

Here are a few more images of the incident on the A26 yesterday.
Tall vehicles that have overturned under a bridge can often create a their own set of problems. There is insufficient headroom to get the ideal length of rigging and the boom has to work at an undesirable, almost flat elevation. It is unlikely that the casualty could ever fit beneath the bridge in its upright position, certainly in this instance as it is the over height vehicle striking the diagonally positioned bridge that causes the vehicle to overturn. Momentum then takes it some way under before it grinds to a halt.
We opted to remove the tractor unit first and slew it out from beneath the bridge before righting it on the North side.
The two rotators were then set up to lift the trailer clear of the road, the red vehicle was also tethered to the rear of the trailer chassis in order to move the whole combination clear of the bridge.
Its was a close decision as to whether we should right the trailer whilst loaded or not. We usually try to keep it all together but damage to the curtain, the owners wish to re load the commodity and a few other considerations lead to us opting to cut the remainder of the curtain, set up the rigging and lift the trailer clear. It was raised above the load and righted in the air before being placed back on its wheels on the carriageway.
The owner kindly provided replacement transport and extra staff to assist our men/forklifts with re loading the packaging.
