Dustcart stuck in dyke - Romney Marsh

Post by MGC » Wed Jan 13, 2021 12:30 pm

Another victim of the narrow Romney marsh lanes today. The lanes are barely wide enough for a car let alone an HGV. The drivers have to do these rounds regularly as there are no options available to them.

This particular vehicle (26T) got fractionally over to the near side and it was only the shape of the dyke that prevented it from falling on its side. The dyke was very deep and water filled. Recovery of trucks in this position can be a little trying as your own truck is also restricted for movement.

Outriggers (stabilisers) are fairly ineffective owing to the lack of suitable ground etc. The rotators have proven to be particularly suitable for this kind of work as when set up correctly, they are able to provide some lift on the lower side whilst also providing a diagonal pull back onto the carriageway. You can see how deep the dyke is by the amount the off side front corner has risen as the dust cart headed out of its hole.
It was driven back to its depot following completion of the recovery.
