Awkward rear-lift from France

Post by mick » Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:42 am

This was a particularly awkward job for a good customer whose vehicle had suffered rear hub/axle trouble down near Paris, France. These vehicles are specialised, having an extremely long overhang, a dropped rear well and virtually no ground clearance. To make matters worse, they are too high to go on a low loader.

We decided to send the Rotator (1075) as it has the longest reach and the heaviest first axle. It wasn't an ideal situation as the rear axle weights would have been very high, and taking the vehicle of this nature on a long distance lift and tow isn't a good idea anyway.

Picking up wasn't easy and several lifts/re-positions of forks etc were required along with some fairly careful adjustments on the first axle air suspension. Loading it onto the ferry at Calais and unloading at Dover took considerable time as the approach angles from the docks into the boat are severe to say the least.

The job was done without further issues, but after all of this I later learned that the fault had been misdiagnosed by a French Scania dealer and it was actually a hub seal failure. I could have had it stripped down in the time it took me to connect up!!
